You may set Thunderbird to always include return receipts with your emails in this section. 

You can also include your own return receipts as well as the location of your receipts in your message.

To adjust the return receipt setting, click Options on the top menu bar while creating a new email, then pick "Return Receipts and or Delivery Status Notification."

Gmail

You can't get a read receipt on the free version of Gmail. However, the capability is only available through G Suite, Google's premium commercial cloud product.

You can enable read receipt requests in the G Suite Admin Console if you have a G Suite subscription. Go to Apps >> GSuite >> Settings for Gmail >> Advanced Settings, then click OK.

Scroll down to the Email Read Receipts section for this cryptic option: "Allow email read receipts to be delivered to all addresses in my organisation as well as the following email addresses." Change the setting to "on."

With this option enabled, you can request a read receipt for the email you're writing by clicking the bottom right down arrow in your Compose window.
